DETROIT, MI — Detroit police say one person is now in custody after a mass shooting on Sunday left three adults dead and four other people injured. Police Chief Todd Bettison said a warrant is expected to be sent to the Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office.
The shooting happened at a Prest Street home that investigators had already been watching. Police said the address had been on their radar for months, and officers had been called there seven times for service since the start of the year.
Officials said the wounded victims suffered non-life-threatening injuries and are expected to recover. Bettison said the residence had a long history of what he described as dancing-type activity.
Police say the arrest came days after gunfire was reported before 7:30 a.m.
According to Detroit police, the shooting was reported around 7:30 a.m. on Sunday on Prest Street between Chalfone and Eaton. Officers were alerted by ShotSpotter technology, which helped direct them to the home.
Bettison said the suspect is now in custody, though investigators have not publicly detailed the person’s identity. The police chief said the case remains active as detectives prepare the file for prosecutors.
That next step matters because the Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office will decide what charges, if any, to authorize. Police have not said when the warrant will be submitted.
Three victims died and four others were expected to recover from injuries
Police said three people were killed in the gunfire. All three of the people who died were older than 30, according to officials.
Four additional people were wounded, and officers said those injuries were not believed to be life-threatening. The injured victims were taken to a hospital and were expected to survive.
Authorities have not released the names of those who died or those who were hurt. Police also have not described the exact sequence of events that led to the shooting.
Officers had visited the Prest Street address seven times this year
Bettison said the home had repeatedly drawn police attention before Sunday’s violence. He said officers had gone to the Prest Street address seven times for service since January.
The chief also said there was already an investigation involving the location. He described it as a place with dancing-type activity similar to a strip club.
Police said that kind of activity had been going on there for about 20 years. The comments suggest investigators had long been aware of concerns tied to the property before the shooting erupted.
Friends say the home was known for gatherings and family, not only police calls
People who knew the victims pushed back on the way the property was described. One friend, Mandy, said those who knew the house saw it as a place filled with family and friends.
“They can call it what they want,” Mandy said. “Everyone that knows this house knows it was love here. It was love here, family, friends, and love. Channel 2 ain’t never been here.”
Another friend said one of the victims appeared to be trying to calm things down before the situation turned more violent. Police have not said whether investigators believe anyone was attempting to de-escalate the dispute.
Detroit investigators are piecing together what happened inside the home
Police have not publicly explained what started the shooting or how many people were inside the residence when the violence broke out. They also have not said what relationship, if any, the suspect had to the victims or to the property itself.
What is clear is that the address had already become a focus for officers before Sunday morning. The combination of prior calls, an ongoing investigation, and the ShotSpotter alert has made the site central to Detroit investigators’ work.
