VISTA, CA — San Diego County sheriff’s deputies are investigating a homicide after a man was found bleeding early Wednesday near a gas station in Vista. The call came in around 3:14 a.m. when an ampm employee reported seeing the man outside at about 1401 E. Vista Way.
Paramedics responded and tried to help, but the man was later pronounced dead. Deputies said the victim appeared to be between 30 and 50 years old and had upper-body trauma.
Investigators initially described the death as a stabbing, but later said that was not confirmed because no weapon has been recovered. Deputies have not publicly identified the man.
Trail of blood leads investigators toward nearby drive-thru
As deputies worked the scene, they found a trail of blood that appeared to come from a nearby Better Buzz drive-thru. That detail has become part of the investigation as deputies try to piece together where the attack began and how the victim ended up outside the gas station.
Authorities have not said whether the blood trail marks the exact point of the assault or whether the man was wounded elsewhere and moved after the attack. They also have not said how long he had been outside before the employee noticed him.
No additional physical evidence has been made public beyond the lack of a recovered weapon. Deputies have released little else about the sequence of events.
No suspect description as detectives search for witnesses
Deputies are looking for a suspect, but they have not released any description. That leaves investigators without a public profile for a person of interest and means the case is still in its earliest stage.
The sheriff’s department said investigators expected to stay in the area for another couple of hours to look for witnesses. Detectives have not said how many people, if any, they had already interviewed.
Officials said they believe the killing was an isolated incident. Even so, the department has not said whether the suspect and victim knew each other or whether the attack was random.
What deputies know about the victim and timing
So far, the only description released for the dead man is that he was between 30 and 50 years old. Deputies have not identified him publicly or said whether family members had been notified.
The timing of the call is one of the few fixed points in the case. The ampm employee contacted police at about 3:14 a.m., setting off the response that led to the discovery of the man’s injuries.
Because the man was already bleeding when the employee saw him, investigators are trying to determine how long the situation had been unfolding before help arrived. Authorities have not said whether surveillance video exists from the gas station or nearby businesses.
Gas station and drive-thru area remains under scrutiny
The investigation has centered on the area around the ampm and the nearby Better Buzz drive-thru along E. Vista Way. Deputies have not said whether either business was directly involved in the incident, but both locations are part of the crime scene review.
That stretch of road is now a focus for evidence collection and witness canvassing. Deputies have not released any details about possible vehicles, directions of travel, or whether the suspect may have left the area on foot.
No motive has been announced. Investigators also have not said whether the assault happened during a robbery, an argument, or for another reason.
Investigators withhold further details as case remains open
Officials said no other details were released, underscoring how early the homicide investigation remains. The sheriff’s department has not provided a timeline for when more information might become public.
For now, deputies are asking the public to help fill in the gaps with witness information. The department’s next steps are likely to include follow-up interviews and a review of any physical or digital evidence tied to the scene.
As of Wednesday, the case was still active and no arrest had been announced. Deputies have not said whether they expect to issue additional updates later in the day.
