ANDERSON, IN — Anderson police arrested a 16-year-old boy Tuesday morning after they say he robbed a man at gunpoint and fired shots during a foot chase on the city’s north side.
Officers were called at 8:05 a.m. to the 2400 block of Poplar Street after reports of gunfire. Police said the teen was later taken into custody without further trouble. No one was hit by the shots.
The arrest came after a fast-moving confrontation in a neighborhood that includes homes and businesses just off Broadway Street.
Man says cash was taken from his home before the chase began
Police said a 21-year-old man reported that the teenager stole cash from his home and ran away. The man then followed the teen as the encounter continued outside.
According to a police news release issued Tuesday afternoon, the teen allegedly turned during the chase, pointed a handgun and fired shots. Investigators did not say how many rounds were fired.
The man was not struck. Police did not immediately release any information about injuries, property damage, or whether the handgun was recovered.
Gunfire reported in a neighborhood near Broadway Street and State Road 9
The shooting was reported in the 2400 block of Poplar Street, an area that sits a few blocks south of where Broadway Street separates from State Road 9. The location is part of a mixed residential and commercial stretch on Anderson’s north side.
Police have not said what led up to the robbery inside the home or how the teen and the man knew each other. They also did not say whether anyone else was present when the theft happened.
The morning timing added urgency to the response, with officers moving into the area soon after the first reports of shots fired came in.
Teen was found and arrested without any further trouble
After the reported robbery and gunfire, police later located the 16-year-old and placed him under arrest. Officers said the arrest happened without any additional trouble.
The teenager was taken to the Madison County Juvenile Detention Center. Police said he faces felony charges connected to both the robbery and the shooting.
Officials did not release the boy’s name because he is a juvenile. No court filing details or hearing dates were included in the release.
Police have released few details as the investigation continues
The case remains under investigation, and police said no other details were available Tuesday. That includes information about whether any witnesses saw the chase begin or whether nearby surveillance video may exist.
Authorities also did not say whether the man who reported the robbery suffered any other harm or whether officers recovered cash from the scene. The release did not identify a motive.
For now, the department says only that the incident began with a reported theft, escalated into a gunpoint chase and ended with an arrest on the city’s north side.
Felony charges follow a brief but dangerous encounter
The arrest ends a morning encounter that police describe as both a robbery and a shooting. Even though no one was struck, officers said the firearm was pointed during the chase and shots were fired in a populated area.
Because the suspect is a juvenile, the case will move through the juvenile justice system rather than adult court unless that changes later. Police did not say whether prosecutors have already reviewed the charges.
What remains clear from the release is that the incident unfolded quickly, drew an immediate police response and left investigators with few public details beyond the basic sequence of events.
