Spring is a season of beginnings, a time when nature blooms from its winter hibernation and bursts into a warm and vibrant life. It’s a season that symbolizes growth and fresh starts, inviting us to shed the heaviness of winter and embrace the lightness and energy of a new cycle. Spring can be an eventful season with activities such as concerts, thrifting, swimming, biking and other seasonal activities.
In the Willow Glen community we honor the spring season with lots of local events. Starting off strong with Willow Glen Elementry’s weekly farmers market. This event may be year round, but is a big hit, especially in spring. This delicious and organic market is full of fresh produce, fun activities, and a variety of baked goods. Another common market is the Cosentino Family Farm, run by Willow Glen locals, located on Carter Ave in San Jose. Reap the benefits of longer days by spending time in nature. Keeping in mind the surplus of enjoyable weather, Maddey Riggs (‘27) recommends picnics because “being outside and moving” is a great way to take advantage before it’s too hot to go outside, and what’s a better way to spend a warm spring day than outside hiking? Willow Glen is close to numerous local hiking trails such as the Los Gatos Creek trail, Communication Hill, and Guadalupe Oak Grove Park. In addition, spring is an opportunity to get outdoors and exercise. A fun and local activity is the Willow Glen 5k which returns this year on May 10th, 2025. This annual 5k is very inclusive and anyone can join. The WG5k raises money for Willow Glen Elementary’s PTA with funds going towards more school programs for WGE students. However you choose to spend your spring in the Willow Glen community, there are a variety of fun activities to select from.
Within our local activities, there is always the opportunity for day trips. From concerts and upcoming movies, to trips down to Carmel or Monterey, the ideas are endless. The beach is always a trendy activity in California, with Santa Cruz beaches being the most popular. Another option that Giada Capaci (‘26) brings up is going to concerts. She describes them as being her most frequent and preferred pastime from last spring. Luckily, there is a common venue called The Catalyst, in Santa Cruz; it’s affordable, but for kids ages 16 and up. However, there’s also the more local option of Art Boutiki in San Jose. It’s cheaper than The Catalyst and open to all ages, although the performers tend to be lesser known. Cheaper than concerts, are movies! Five Dollar Tuesdays at the local CineLux makes this more of an attractive option. Upcoming movies in spring are Mission Impossible, Karate Kid, live action Lilo & Stitch, Snow White, and The Minecraft Movie.
The news of spring elicits new beginnings, sunny days, and so many more opportunities to go out. Take advantage of the open fun and let it take a hold of the dim perspective winter forced on us. This is the time to try new things, eat good food, and get some fresh air. With something for everyone, this spring promises to be a season full of growth, excitement, and fond memories for the entire community.
